Joker (2019 film)

I was a bit disappointed due to the massive hype it got from everyone. It was too incohesive and felt rushed. The heavy-handedness was too much. No one only has bad things happen to them absolutely constantly and never find a single source of warmth and comfort outside of their delusions... but we are supposed to feel like "this is life" for some people, and that it is in essence inevitable. That's where its lack of "fleshed out political commentary" really makes it suffer the most in my view.

But I don't mean to only focusing on the negatives. There was some good stuff. The social commentary is there but largely undeveloped/in the background. This is the most frustrating part of watching this movie as an anarchist; you're only presented a caricature of "anarchy" in the foreground, and you feel bad for everyone who isn't familiar with anti-capitalist theory who is missing a significant dimension to the movie. I think this movie is a good opportunity especially for apolitical people/centrists/right-wingers to familiarize themselves with leftist thinking. Here's a great "Marxist Analysis" of the movie (but we can safely disregard the ending -- there will be no "communist revolution").
